I recently updated my machine - and after deliberating about getting a Core i7 chip with new mobo and ddr3 ram at a cost of $1500 I decided to get a e8500 ($265 from MSY) (OC'd at 4.5ghz on my existing p5k pro).
The i7 chip is great if you are doing things that will take advantage of 4 cores however this apps are few and far between and usually involve video editing and 3d rendering.
